Why this Recipe Works

Making a really good hamburger yourself isn’t that hard at all if you use my hamburger recipe. I always have the seasonings I use in this recipe on hand, and you probably do too.

Easy hamburger recipe

Making a Hamburger yourself

With this recipe, you can make a really simple hamburger that’s, of course, packed with flavor! My main goal here is to inspire you to actually make it yourself, it’s such a treat. So much better than when you get them to go! And honestly: it doesn’t take nearly as long as you think.

Want to serve something tasty with the burger? I’ve got plenty of options for that too! You can make fries or roasted potatoes and making your own mayonnaise to go with them makes the meal absolutely perfect.

Hamburger Recipe Ingredients

The secret lies mainly, besides a little attention and love while cooking, in the combination of spices. The burgers get their amazing texture from the addition of egg. Season them generously with salt and pepper, because the flavor always weakens a bit during cooking.

  • Ground meat, I prefer using ground beef but you can opt for pork or a mix of both
  • Egg and breadcrumbs, to bind the burgers and give texture
  • Aromatics, garlic and onion add a ton of flavor
  • Flavorings, I used smoked paprika, salt, pepper and mustard to further flavor the burgers
  • Burger buns, I like to make my own sesame buns but you can also use store-bought

Make your own Hamburger Sauce

Of course, I’ll also give you the recipe to make a delicious hamburger sauce yourself, kind of like my Big Mac sauce. You can serve burgers with some mayonnaise and ketchup/mustard, but they really become next-level delicious with a homemade sauce!

My absolute favorite recipe for hamburger sauce (and my family’s too) is definitely this one. It’s a mixture of mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, honey, vinegar, garlic powder, and onion powder. I always have all these ingredients on hand, and it’s a delicious sauce with a perfectly balanced flavor.

You can put the sauce on the burger, or serve it on the side so everyone can decide for themselves how much sauce they’d like on their burger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of spices do I use?

In this recipe, I use paprika, but you can also choose from: oregano, thyme, chili powder, or cumin. Try to balance the flavors and, above all, choose your own favorites.

What kind of ground meat do I use?

You can make hamburgers with any type of ground meat. In this recipe, I chose lean ground beef. If you choose a different (slightly fattier) ground meat, you may need to add a little more breadcrumbs.

You can make a hamburger as elaborate as you like! For these burgers, I chose lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and a tasty sauce.

Ingredients

4 portions
For the burgers
  • 500 gram ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 1 small onion or shallot (grated)
  • butter or oil for frying
For the sauce
  • 50 gram mayonnaise
  • 25 gram ketchup
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp honey (or sugar)
  • ½ tsp vinegar (or lemon juice)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • pinch of salt & pepper
For the burgers
  • buns, lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles, and the sauce

Equipment

  • Frying pan
  • Mixing bowls

INSTRUCTIONS (how to make this recipe):

Instructions for burgers

  • Mix the ground beef with the egg, breadcrumbs, mustard, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic, and onion in a bowl. Mix well.
  • Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties (Make them slightly larger than the bun, as they shrink when cooked.).
  • Let the patties rest in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes so they firm up (in the meantime, you can make the sauce).
  • Heat a pan with oil or butter over medium heat and cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.

Sauce Instructions

  • Mix all ingredients well in a small bowl. Taste and add extra salt, pepper, or honey as needed for the perfect balance.
  • Let the sauce sit in the fridge for 10 minutes so the flavors can meld together (in the meantime, you can fry the burgers)

Serving

  • Serve the burgers on a bun with toppings such as lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles, and the sauce. Enjoy!
