This teriyaki sauce recipe is not difficult at all. You can easily make this delicious sauce at home and the great thing is that you can season it to your own taste. It is one of my favourite sauces for stir-frying and marinating.

If you have been following me for a while, you will have noticed that I love to cook with teriyaki sauce. Fish, meat, poultry, it makes everything delicious! Luckily, you can easily make it yourself, and today I am going to tell you how. Because believe me, homemade teriyaki is so much better than the store-bought stuff 😉.

Teriyaki sauce is an essential condiment in Japanese cuisine. It is versatile and goes well with almost everything. It is a sauce that is very easy to make and store yourself, so you always have a supply on hand for a delicious meal.

How long will my homemade teriyaki sauce keep?

You can keep this homemade Japanese sauce in the fridge for at least a week. Make sure it is in a sealed container, such as a jar with a lid or a bottle. I like a bottle with a swing top because you can just pour it out when you want to use it.

For some reason, making your own sauces can seem like a difficult thing to do. With this teriyaki sauce recipe, I want to show you that it’s really not that hard. But the result is so delicious!

All you need to make your own version of this great sauce are a few ingredients that I always have around the house. You need fresh ginger and fresh garlic, and all the other ingredients are from the cupboard: soy sauce, brown sugar, honey, rice vinegar, cornstarch and sesame oil. With these you make a a homemade sauce which is in perfect balance!

Ingredients

1 bottle
  • 1 clove garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1 tsp ginger (fresh – grated)
  • 75 ml soy sauce
  • 25 ml water
  • 2 tbsp light brown caster sugar
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (mixed with 2 tbsp cold water to make a paste)
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • sesame seeds (optional)
  • sunflowerseed oil

Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • bottle

INSTRUCTIONS (how to make this recipe):

  • Heat some sunflower oil in a small saucepan and sauté the garlic and ginger until they start to smell delicious.
  • Add the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, honey and rice vinegar and bring to the boil.
  • Meanwhile, make a cornflour paste by mixing 2 tablespoons of cornflour with 2 tablespoons of cold water and add to the sauce.
  • Reduce to the desired thickness, but remember that the sauce will continue to thicken slightly as it cools, so don’t reduce too much.
  • Then add the sesame oil for flavour and you can add more sesame seeds if you like.
  • Allow the sauce to cool and pour into a small container or bottle. Cover and refrigerate or use immediately. Enjoy!
