Overnight oats basic recipe

The Best Overnight Oats

As the name suggests, overnight oats are made by soaking rolled oats overnight. They’re incredibly simple to prepare. Just combine the oats, milk, yogurt, cinnamon, and, if you like, a little sweetener. Adding a bit of homemade jam is also delicious. Cover the bowl or jar and refrigerate overnight.

The next morning, give everything a quick stir, add your favorite toppings, and your nutritious, delicious breakfast is ready to enjoy! If you’re looking for another easy breakfast recipe, try these banana pancakes or these sourdough crackers.

Overnight oats ingredients

Recipe Ingredients

This is a true basic overnight oats recipe. It’s delicious exactly as it is, but it’s also the perfect base for endless variations. You can mix extra ingredients into the oats themselves or pile on your favorite toppings.

  • Rolled oats – I like to use old-fashioned rolled oats for this but quick oats is an option too.
  • Yogurt – you can use both regular yogurt or plant-based yogurt
  • Milk – also either regular milk or plant-based milk
  • ground Cinnamon – adding cinnamon is optional but I love cinnamon so I like to add it. Cardamom or a bit of ginger is also delicious
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon honey or your preferred sweetener, to taste
  • Optional: chia seeds

Favorite Overnight Oats Toppings

  • Fresh fruit (such as strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries)
  • Nuts or granola
  • Peanut butter
  • Chocolate
  • Jam
  • Dried fruit

You can also switch up the base by using different kinds of (plant-based) milk or yogurt, or stir in one of these flavor boosters.

Easy Mix-In Ideas

  • Spices, such as cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
  • Cocoa powder
  • Vanilla extract
  • Chia seeds or other seeds (chia seeds also make the oats thicker)

Are Overnight Oats Healthy?

In my opinion, overnight oats are absolutely a healthy breakfast. They’re packed with nutrients, and soaking the oats overnight makes them easier to digest. Did you know that oats are naturally gluten-free*? That makes them a great option if you’re avoiding or limiting gluten.

I’m a huge fan of oats in general. They’re not just great for breakfast, you can bake with them too. My oatmeal cookies (coming soon!) are definitely worth trying! Looking for more breakfast inspiration? Be sure to browse all of my breakfast recipes.

FAQ Overnight oats

Can I make overnight oats ahead of time?

Absolutely! Overnight oats are perfect for meal prep and that’s the whole point really. You can make several jars at once and store them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Add fresh fruit just before serving for the best texture.

How long do they need to soak?

For the best texture, let the oats soak for at least 6 hours, although overnight (8-12 hours) is ideal. This gives the oats plenty of time to soften and absorb the liquid.

What type of oats should I use?

Old-fashioned rolled oats are the best choice. Quick oats will create a much softer, almost porridge-like texture, while steel-cut oats remain quite chewy unless they’re soaked much longer.

Can I use plant-based milk and yogurt?

Yes! Almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, or coconut milk all work well. You can also use your favorite dairy-free yogurt to make the recipe completely plant-based.

Can I eat overnight oats warm?

Yes. Although they’re traditionally served cold, you can warm them in the microwave for 30-60 seconds if you prefer a warm breakfast. Add fresh toppings after heating.
