Dutch Apple Pie Recipe

Recently I made quite a few of these apple pies again. It seemed like the perfect time to share them here as well. Because even though I already have an enormous number of apple recipes (like this delicious apple loaf cake!) on the site, this classic was missing. High time to change that.

Baking with Apples

Aside from this amazing Dutch apple pie recipe, there are many other ways to bake with apples. Some of my favorites are:

Ingredients for Dutch apple pie

Ingredients for a Dutch Apple Pie

  • Apples – obviously this is the most important part of homemade apple pie! Check below which varieties of apples are the tastiest.
  • Butter – I really think butter is the tastiest for baking apple pie, but margarine works too.
  • Self-rising flour – this can optionally also be replaced with plain flour combined with baking powder.
  • Raisins – not everyone likes raisins in apple pie. You can leave them out, but then add some breadcrumbs on the bottom to absorb excess moisture from the apples.

What kind of Apples do you use?

Traditionally, Granny Smith is of course the apple to use in your homemade apple pie. And it is still a great choice. But nowadays there are so many more apples available that work perfectly in this easy apple pie recipe. Think of Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Pink Lady or Cosmic Crisp – a mix is often the tastiest, that way you have the fresh and tart flavor.

How To Make Dutch Apple Pie?

Divide the dough in three pieces

Step 1 – Make the dough

The first step in making your apple pie is making the dough. Keep in mind that you need to chill the dough you have made in the refrigerator while you make the filling. Divide the dough into three pieces and place them in the refrigerator.

Step 2 – Make the filling

Peel the apples and cut everything into cubes or slices. If you are using organic apples, you can also leave the peel on if you prefer.

Step 3 – Mix the filling

Next, mix all the apples with the sugar, cinnamon, and soaked raisins. Drizzle with lemon juice and stir everything well.

Make the lattice

Step 4 – Fill the springform

The final step is to roll out the dough. I do this with a rolling pin. Then brush the apple pie with egg wash (whisked with a little milk) and bake in the oven.

Expert tip

To get a well-baked apple pie with a nicely baked base, sprinkle it with panko (Japanese breadcrumbs). Alternatively, you can also use breadcrumbs for this.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store leftover pie?

You can keep the apple pie outside the refrigerator for 1-2 days. Make sure to cover it well. In the refrigerator for 3-4 days, but the crust may become a little drier. You can also freeze slices of pie.

I like my pie a bit warm, can I reheat it?

Yes, that works perfectly. To warm it up, it’s best to use the oven. Set the oven to 150ËšC/300ËšF and warm the apple pie for about 20 minutes. The microwave works too, but the pie will be softer.

Can I ommit the raisins?

Yes, that works. In that case, do use a little extra panko or breadcrumbs to absorb the moisture from the apples.

Ingredients

12 pieces
For the dough:
  • 1 egg (medium)
  • 225 gram butter (unsalted – at room temperature)
  • 225 gram light brown sugar
  • 450 gram self-raising flour
  • 1 sachet vanilla sugar
  • pinch of salt
For the filling:
  • 100 gram raisins
  • 1.5 kg apples
  • 50 gram sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • extra: panko, butter for greasing the springform pan, 1 egg and a splash of milk

Equipment

  • Springform pan with a diameter of approx. 22 cm / 8,5 inch

INSTRUCTIONS (how to make this recipe):

  • Start by soaking the raisins in warm water and let them sit for a while as you make the dough.
  • Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius / 347 Fahrenheit (top and bottom heat)
  • For the dough, put all the ingredients in a large bowl and knead until you have a nice firm dough. Divide the dough into 3 parts, wrap them in cling film and place them in the refrigerator for a while as you continue with the filling.
  • Peel the apples, remove the cores and cut them into slices. Then put the apples in a large bowl with the sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice.
  • Drain the soaked raisins and add them to the filling. Mix everything together well.
  • Grease the springform pan with butter.
  • Now take one part of the dough and roll it out with a rolling pin into a nice round sheet. If you don’t have a rolling pin, you can also do this by hand.
  • Spread the dough over the bottom of a greased springform pan.
  • Roll out the 2nd part of the dough and spread it over the sides of the springform pan.
  • To get a nice crispy, well-baked base, now sprinkle a little panko or breadcrumbs over the bottom. Then pour the apple filling on top.
  • Now roll out the last part of the dough as well and use a small knife to cut it into long strips, about a finger’s width. For a nice effect, place them crosswise over the dough in a diamond pattern.
  • Beat the last egg with a small splash of milk and brush the top of the apple pie with it.
  • Bake the apple pie in the oven for approx. 1 hour until golden brown. Let the pie cool for a while before slicing it.
  • Serve the apple pie as is or with a nice dollop of whipped cream, custard or ice cream. Enjoy!
