Grandma’s Green Bean Mash
This green bean mash is perfect for a busy weeknight: nutritious, flavorful, and on the table in 40 minutes. The combination of creamy and spicy mashed potatoes, crisp green beans, and savory bacon bits makes this dish a deliciously flavorful whole.
Green Bean Mash Ingredients
To make this comforting meal you’ll need the following ingredients:
- Potatoes, preferably Russet potatoes
- Peppers, I like to use red peppers
- Green beans, or as they are known in the UK: runner beans
- Flavorings, I used curry powder, onion and mustard
- Add-ins, like crème fraîche (for creaminess), bacon bits and grated cheese
Want to turn it into a complete meal? Then fry up some meatballs to go with it! I like to add some pickles and pickled onions, they really top off the dish.

Classic Dutch Stamppot
I love the Dutch mash or stamppot formula: mashed potatoes, vegetables, and a nice piece of meat on the side. It’s super classic and Dutch, of course, but you can always make me happy with it! Are you also totally in the mood for more stamppot? Then I have a few more great recipes for you:
- Spinach Mashed Potatoes – this one’s always a hit
- Sauerkraut Casserole – a personal favorite, especially with homemade sauerkraut
- Leek Mashed Potatoes – this is a really good, surprising combination
- Sweet Potato Mash – this is a new variation, but it’s still incredibly delicious

Beans from my Own Garden
As you can see, I already have a whole bunch of Dutch recipes on my website, but a good stamppot with green beans was still missing. Since this year, I’ve also been growing my own green beans in my vegetable garden, so this seemed like the perfect moment to share my recipe with you!
You can find all kinds of green beans; besides the classic green ones, there are also purple and white/light yellow varieties. They all taste delicious and have a nice crunch. If you have a garden or vegetable patch of your own, I definitely recommend growing your own beans!
Green Bean Mash with Meatballs
I like to add bacon bits, but you can also add some meatballs for a more complete meal. Would you rather keep it vegetarian? Then you can add plant-based bacon bits and/or meatballs. Below, I’ll answer a few common questions about making this green bean mash.
