Chicken shawarma with Turkish bread, a delicious, quick, and ideal meal for Friday night or any other night when you feel like it! Super easy to make and a delicious combination of flavors.
Turkish bread with chicken shawarma
This recipe for this juicy chicken shawarma with Turkish bread is ideal as an easy meal to end the week. Although you don’t need much and it’s quick to make, it’s incredibly flavorful. Season the chicken with shawarma spices and the best part is to make your own garlic sauce to go with it!

The tastiest Turkish bread
Of course, you can use any type of bread for this recipe. However, I find pide, as it is called in Turkish, ideal because it is light and large. The crust is thin and, if you pre-bake it, it becomes deliciously crispy. You can buy it or make it yourself, just like you can make your own pita bread!

Easy stuffed Turkish bread
I kept the filling fairly simple. The basics are (of course) chicken shawarma with Turkish bread and garlic sauce, I added a layer of grated cheese on top of the chicken and let it melt in the oven. Because everything tastes better with a little cheese, right? 😉
For a fresh touch, I like to add some lettuce or fresh vegetables like tomato slices or cucumber. I opted for lamb’s lettuce, but you could also use iceberg lettuce or other varieties. Add some yogurt sauce or garlic sauce and you’re feast is complete!

Chicken shawarma recipe
This recipe for chicken shawarma with Turkish bread is very simple, and you can have a delicious meal on the table in half an hour with very little effort. Alternatively, if you feel like going all out, you can make as many components as possible yourself.
This includes the garlic sauce and the Turkish bread, but you can also make your own spice blend! A shawarma spice blend typically contains paprika, coriander, turmeric, cumin, cardamom, cloves and cayenne pepper. You can make your own mixture or buy it in the store.

Turkish food
I love Turkish streetfood dishes, you may have seen my other chicken shawarma recipe. It’s quite similair to this chicken shawarma with Turkish bread, but in this recipe we’re stuffing the Turkish bread rather than serving it as a sandwich. Another lovely Turkish recipe on my website is this Turkish gözleme, stuffed flatbread with spinach. So delicious! Let’s get cooking!

Ingredients
- 500 gram boneless chicken breast (cut into strips)
- 2 tbsp shawarma spices (more or less – depending on how you like it)
- 1 onion (chopped)
- 1 clove garlic (or more – depending on you like it)
- 1 Turkish bread (or medium-sized pide)
- garlic sauce (homemade or store-bought)
- grated cheese
- lamb's lettuce (or other lettuce)
- fresh vegetables of your choice
- olive oil
Equipment
- Frying pan
INSTRUCTIONS (how to make this recipe):
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius / 350 Fahrenheit with top and bottom heat.
- Mix the shawarma spices with the chicken, adding a little olive oil and half of the onion. Mix well.
- Add a little oil to a large frying pan and fry the remaining onion and garlic until golden brown. Add the chicken and fry over a medium heat until golden brown and cooked through.
- For extra crispiness, heat the Turkish bread or pide in the oven for about 5 minutes (optional).
- When the chicken is ready, cut the bread in half. Spread the garlic sauce on the bottom half and arrange the chicken on top. Sprinkle some grated cheese on top to taste and place the bottom half in the oven until the cheese begins to melt and bubble.
- Meanwhile, spread the garlic sauce on the top half of the bread.
- Remove the pide from the oven, top with lettuce and replace the top half. Cut the pide into generous pieces or wedges. Enjoy your meal!
