Easy beef stroganoff recipe
As its name suggests, beef stroganoff is a true classic of Russian cuisine. The dish dates back to the 19th century and is named after the powerful Stroganov family of the Russian Empire. There are two stories about how the dish came about.
The first story is that the dish originated during the conquest of much of Siberia. During the campaign, it was so cold that the cook could only cut the meat into thin slices. Another story claims that it is named after Aleksandr Grigorevich Stroganov, who held lavish parties where the first authentic beef stroganoff was prepared.

You may also come across this dish as boeuf à la Stroganoff, which suggests that the chef was French. Alternatively, it could refer to the fact that Mr Stroganov prepared the meat in the French style and made the sauce in the Russian style. Either way, it’s a Russian dish with a French twist!
